Those of us at Keeney’s believe that a better world will come as a result of our careful consideration of how we can improve social conditions, create economic opportunity and live and work within our environment’s capacity to regenerate.

In order to reduce our own environmental footprint, we continually discover and implement simple steps toward sustainability for ourselves and our customers. Here are a few examples.

1. We Re-use.
   Simply by re-using cardboard shipping boxes, we eliminate the need to purchase 200 cartons a day. That adds up to 52,000 cardboard boxes a year! This simple move saves countless trees, gallons of water, kilowatts of power and transportation emissions while reducing our overhead.
2. We Recycle.
   Keeney’s recycles all of our cardboard, shipping pallets and other related warehouse materials. We collect Styrofoam packing peanuts and donate them to a green-minded customer who will in turn not have to purchase packing material from us. This step saves 196 cubic feet of packaging foam peanuts from being produced every 6 weeks. Reusing is the most efficient form of recycling.
3. We Use Less Fuel & Electricity.
   We changed to high efficiency catalytic heaters in our warehouse to get more heat from each unit of fuel burned. Realizing that is better not to burn it in the first place, we keep the temperature in the furniture zone of our warehouse set at 52 degrees. These steps have dramatically reduced our greenhouse emissions. We also use highly efficient electric forklifts and special fluorescent lighting in our warehouse.
4. We Reuse & Repair Whenever Possible.
   We carefully maintain our delivery fleet to extend each vehicle’s useful life. And when confronted with the need to buy or replace, we tend toward repair, even when it doesn’t make immediate bottom line sense. We buy used whenever possible since something that has already been produced, is readily available and is serviceable is always a better sustainable choice. We carry out this ethic in offering recycled and refurbished Gen2 Steelcase furniture to our Systems Furniture customers.
5. We Reduce Our Carbon Emissions.
   One of the areas where we have made great advancements in reducing our emission of greenhouse gasses is the implementation of our Flexible Delivery Manifest System. To respond to constantly changing delivery requirements, we use flexible daily routing of our delivery fleet to maximize route efficiency and truck running time. Each day we alter our delivery routes to shorten the time Keeney’s trucks are on the road. These efforts have enabled us to grow as a business, with more deliveries, and to do them with fewer trucks. Having no engine running is better than an efficient engine running. When appropriate, we also utilize the services of a local delivery company to reach outlying areas where their trucks are already going so we don’t waste resources driving from centralized delivery areas to marginal areas.

Our commitment to sustainability recognizes that all business activities are derived from or take place in the natural environment. Based on a long-term perspective and the realization that we are in a closed system, it is easy to see that what is good for the environment is also good for our customers. And being interconnected, what is good for the environment and customers is also good for our employees and our business. We also realize that there are no quick fixes. By paying attention to detail and being a consciously engaged participant, we can all reduce the negative impacts of normal business activities and enjoy the resulting efficiencies.
